History of UDS

Following several years working in rural Uganda with C.M.S. as a medical superintendant in Ngora hospital, Dr. John Maitland and his wife Hilary founded Uganda Development Services (UDS) with the aim of helping the poorest uplift themselves, by providing appropriate and relevant information.

UDS was registered as a UK charity in 1994 and in 1997, as an NGO in Uganda. There is  an office in Kampala and a district development branch in Kamuli.

After extensive research, Kamuli was chosen as a focus area for the initial project because of its high levels of poverty. The beneficiaries of our work are individuals and families who need information to help them progress in their education, or their work. The range of our work now extends to the farming communities, and the disabled. It has the constant theme that through Sharing Knowledge, we can help people Build Lives.

The UK arm of the charity was originally situated at Dr Maitland's home in Cheshire, but in 2006 the office moved south to West London. Our work is supported by committed donors, a number of churches and a handful of trusts.
